The Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth invited me to participate in their Port City Podcast. Ben VanCamp and Jen Stevens were wonderful hosts and I had a great time. Speaking of time, it flew by and I wished we had 30 more minutes. We talk about how to even define tech anymore, local startup Helios Hockey, and some thoughts on autonomous vehicles. Give it a look.
One aspect I wish we had more time to discuss is a counter to the ‘downer’ side of the autonomous tech we discussed. There is a lot of change coming and that can certainly feel negative to everyone it will impact. However… right now in the US every 7 seconds someone is seriously injured due to a car accident. Enough to send them to a hospital. Over 37,000 die in the US each year. 2.35 million are injured or disabled. Worldwide 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. Check out more stats below and on this site.
We live with this horrible situation and all its death and carnage because we seem to have no choice. Most of us, if not all, know someone who has been seriously hurt or killed. If we don’t, we know them through a story from a close friend. Virtually every kid has some horror story about a fellow student from their time in High School. Hopefully autonomous vehicles save those lives.
